Richard Henry Whitehurst - Founder & director

In his own words:

As I look out to the rising sun from a cliff near my home in Queensland, Australia, with the vast Pacific waters giving birth to a golden road of awe, with my vision being overwhelmed by the shimmering resplendence – with the horizon curving off to my right and my left suggesting the spherical immensity of the planet – with the Earth’s gravity holding down all those vast waters – with the thin film of the Earth’s atmosphere cloaking a limitless cosmic abyss there just above my head – with the diverse swarms of life permeating land, sea and sky all around me – with my own inscrutable biological and perceptual circumstances ... within all this and more, I begin to feel my heart warming and opening through a palpable, visceral up-welling of deep sensations in the center of my chest – to beautiful surges of astonishment, and excitement and love. These kinds of powerful feelings, so compelling yet so private, are what have brought about the development of Planetary Human: the website you are visiting and the sense of personal identity that has composed these words.

This involvement is both a ‘head-trip’ and a ‘heart-journey’ – intensely contemplated and emotionally inter-fused by the astounding discoveries of the sciences. This identity extends into that of the ‘possibilian’ – in which there's an avoidance of fixed ideas about any ultimate model of reality, and a posture of remaining open to possibilities rather than being closed by things believed, or by things supposedly known. Like the wandering albatross I remain aloft. I refuse to land on any final belief, story or conception about reality. I revel in unanswered questions and I adhere to a kind of ‘cognitive deficitism’ – an orientation that the human nervous system, its questions, and its conceptual frameworks are utterly incapable of encapsulating the totality of reality, no matter how relentlessly and/or heroically may they try.

To me, a story about reality – scientific, mathematical, theological, or otherwise – is never ‘The Reality’ itself.  I embrace ineffable Mystery.                  (...read more)

Alison Rickert

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology and Psychology

A Scientist: “My early steps to becoming a planetary human were shaped by six years working as a marine biologist in the 1970’s when I had the unique opportunity to live on various remote islands on the Great Barrier Reef as a pioneer of two research stations. I was literally immersed in an exquisite but unexplored marine world. Just as astronauts suspended in space were overwhelmed by the earth’s beauty and oneness, I came to appreciate that the natural world matters, it sustains, inspires and heals us and has inherent value in its own right.”

A Mother: “Thirty years of boot camp rearing three children with my partner Peter grounded me, my capacity to love was enlarged, meditation became my life line and I began to explore inner space. From this I learnt that love matters”

A Counsellor: “Exploring the psychology side of my degree, I worked as a counsellor with Relationship Australia for ten years and pioneered a relationship course in schools.  I came to the conclusion that most of us seek love over hate, we long for deep connection but sometimes the small “I” gets in the way of the larger “We”.”

Alison and daughter Arwen visiting Lizard Island for the 40 year anniversary of setting up the Lizard Island research station. Arwen lived on the island in a tent as a baby in the early days of the research station's establishment.

An Activist: “In the last decade I have become a climate change activist.  In 2006 I was in the first Australian cohort of 80 people trained by Al Gore, to deliver his presentation about climate change.  From this experience I learnt that community matters and if we are going to preserve life as we know it on our planet we all need to do our bit and work as a community of global citizens”.

What now ?
“So let’s do it; let’s rise above our myopic view of life and embrace a planetary view; become mindful of our oneness, our humanity and our dependence on our beautiful earth/ water/air planet and act from this place”

Kevin W. Kelley

Artist, entrepreneur, and author of the NY Times and international best-selling books The Home Planet (1988), and Embracing Earth (1991), is now creating Infinitaas - a new paradigm for visualizing and exploring Big History and Earth Systems Science.

The Home Planet is a large format book of stunning photographs of Earth taken from space, accompanied by quotations from astronauts and cosmonauts reflecting on the profound effect of experiencing Earth from the perspective of space. Over 600,000 copies of the book have been printed and distributed worldwide in 11 languages, and it remains the largest co-publishing venture between American and Russian publishers.

Embracing Earth, New Views of Our Changing Planet, co-authored with Payson Stevens, was the first book to present an integral perspective of the earth's five interconnected systems: the geosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the chryosphere and the biosphere. It was Chronicle Books’ lead volume in the fall of 1992.

After a period of running World Perspectives, a company providing images of space and the planet to the publishing and advertising industries, Kevin became involved with a number of start up companies, including one he co-founded intended to put the first Earth-looking TV camera into orbit.

In 2009, with partner Rachel Bagby, Kevin co-founded Metanoiaa™, a design and production organization. Metanoiaa's breakthrough visualization technologies, social media, and artistic civic engagement strategies are designed to:
• Show audiences our place within time, space, and the unfolding processes of our cosmos
• Create collaborative understanding, conversation and capacity through social media
• Engage people through an ecological and earth-systems literacy program to take wise action towards developing global civilizations

Dr Koniver with Astronaut
Edgar Mitchell in the filming
of 'Grounded'

Laura Koniver, M.D. is a physician who has combined the best of modern medicine with intuitive healing, along with the application of grounding (sometimes known as earthing), relational elements gleaned from her deep experiences as a mother, and the joy of her artistic expression portraying states of wellness through her paintings. She sees her duty as a healer to look at health problems from a deeper level then just an analytical mind-frame. In the course of her medical practice she has discovered that there is room for both sides of herself; the analytical mind and the intuitive one. In this way she has been using her intuition to sense the deeper meaning behind health issues, the reasons behind the issues, the energetic imbalances, and the deeper healing work needed to resolve the issues. Dr Koniver has found that running a health problem through both the lens of modern medicine and the lens of intuition reveals a bigger picture that can’t be seen any other way.
